AMERICAN RED
CROSS LEVELS
The
Solon Recreation Aquatic staff is very happy
to provide American Red Cross Learn to Swim levels.
As an ARC affiliate, your child will be receiving
quality lessons. Please take the time to review the
age suggestions and Level requirements so you can
place your child in the level that is appropriate.
Improper placement can lead to
frustration for the parent, instructor and the
student. Due to limited class sizes and safety,
students can not be moved up or back a level if they
are not registered for the correct level. If you
have questions or are not sure of the level
placement please contact Mary at the S.C.C.
before the registration date. Rules and polices
will be reviewed at the first class of each session,
a parent is expected to accompany student.
TODDLER 6 MONTHS – 3 YEARS
Adult must accompany the child in the water for each
class.
Only
this adult & student will be allowed in pool area.
If child is not toilet trained, they must
wear a swim diaper, or cloth diaper with rubber
pants under their swim suit. Parents will be
guided on how to work on skills by the instructor.
This level prepares young children to become
comfortable in the water, and separate from
parents. Skills taught: entering and exiting the
pool safely, feel comfortable in the water,
submerging, blowing bubbles, floating on front and

Ten questions
frequently asked in the Aquatics Area.
What is the age that children have to
be accompanied by an adult in the water?
Answer: Ages 5 and Under. The child must be
accompanied with in arms reach by an adult 18 years
of age or older. Once the child is 6 years of age
the parent should evaluate if they are safe enough
for the parent not to be with their child at all
times.
Can I go upstairs to workout and let
my child swim at the same time?
Answer: All children 8 years of age and under must
be accompanied by an adult at all times in the
aquatics area. Children ages 9 – 11 must be
accompanied by an adult that is inside the community
center. They may be in the aquatics area or in
another part of the center. Children that are 12
years of age and older may enter the center at
anytime without being accompanied by an adult.
What are the normal temperatures of
the pools?
Answer: The Community Center Indoor Pool is kept at
83 degrees. The Outdoor Community Center Pool and
the Solon Municipal Pool are kept at 82 degrees. The
spa is kept between 99 and 103 degrees.
If the pool temperatures are kept at
temperatures in the 80’s why does the pool seem cold
at times.
Answer: These temperatures fluctuate at times when
new water is added to backwash and fill. They
generally are pretty consistent. The pool also seems
to take on different temperatures due to the air
temperature. The Indoor pool air temperature is set
at 85 degrees. Sometimes that makes the initial
plunge into the water feel really cold. When you
enter the pool in cold temperatures sometimes that
will make the pool water seem extremely warm. A
person’s body type and circulation can also be
contributing factors
What is the height restriction for
going down the slide?
Answer: The height restriction for the water slides
is riders must be at least 48 inches tall to ride
the slide. There are no exceptions to this rule
including age, and swimming ability. These rules are
safety guidelines set up by the state of Ohio. If
you are unsure of your child’s height a staff member
can measure them at the slide.
What floatation devices are patrons
allowed to use in the pool.
Answer: The facility allows kick boards and pull
buoys for lap swim only. We also allow noodles.
Noodles are not permitted on the play feature, in
the diving well or by the drop zone of the slide.
Are patrons allowed to wear t-shirts
in the water?
Answer: Patrons are able to wear t-shirts in the
water. The shirts designed for the water are
preferred. Shirts that fit loosely are not permitted
on the water slides or diving boards.
When do you call rest period?
Answer: 10 minute rest periods are held at the last
ten minutes of each hour.
If we have a question regarding
something in the Aquatics Area who should we talk
to?
Answer: If you have Aquatics questions you may ask
any of our staff members. We ask that you try not to
talk to the lifeguards while they are in the
lifeguard stands. If a lifeguard cannot answer your
question they should be able to get you in contact
with someone from our pool management team whether
it be, the Aquatics Director, the Assistant
Supervisor of Programming or a Pool Supervisor.
Why can’t swimmers wear gym shorts in
the water?
Answer: Pool water chemistry is very important to
our patrons safety. A number of outside factors can
contribute. One of the factors that can contribute
is body perspiration. The Community Center is also a
fitness center that includes a cardio area, a free
weight area, a gymnasium, a track and an aerobics
room. We have a large number of patrons that can be
using those areas prior to wanting to use the pool.
We do not want patrons to get in the pool in their
workout attire. The sweat on their clothing can
directly affect the water chemistry and make the
pool uncomfortable for patrons.
